Perhaps the most popular feature created by managers of web communities is the "daily sign-in thread". Maybe I'm being a bit cynical if I were to suggest that some managers merely use this as device to boost their ratings but I've seen plenty of evidence that this feature is a genuine way for people to stay-in-touch with other (requiring next to no effort) and contributes to building that sense of community.
Our site attracts quite a lot of visitors. Our membership growth also demonstrates that people like what they find at our site, however most members appear to be content to browse the contributions of the few without taking a few seconds to let us know that they've visited. That's OK ... we're here as much for your entertainment as for you to provide your input.
So, whilst I quietly contemplated the "unfair" workload borne by a few active contributors on our message boards, I wondered whether starting a daily sign-in thread was such a bad idea.
This is your site. I'm not asking much, just a small request that once, each day before leaving our site, you post a quick "Hi" or "G'day" (cutesy pictures are unnecessary, but I'm sure we'd love to see other members' "siggies") just to let us know that you've visited. And you blokes, particularly ... you have to join in. You don't want the wimmen doing all the talking, do you?
Thanks ... cheers ... and G'day!
